I moved!
If you’ve noticed, I’ve moved my blog from my old site to join forces with my partner in all areas of life for the last 20 years, Michael, over here at Hedge-Ops! (If you look closely, the DNS for my old site is still wonky, but don’t judge as this is certainly an area that I have not mastered.)
The move was actually my idea. If you’ve been with me for the last seven years, you’ll know that the story of my journey into tech is a bit unconventional, to say the least. I took a total leap of faith and gave it a go, and for the most part, it panned out pretty well.
Over the years we’ve tried to help others reproduce those results in their own careers, and y’all, it’s hard! I honestly believe that it requires systemic change in the technology industry at large, but where there is no change, we want to help people get past those hurdles.
My secret weapon all along has really been my husband, our partnership really. He was the mastermind behind my efforts since he knew the industry so much more deeply than I did from both an engineering and leadership perspective. He taught me everything I knew in the beginning. He had the plan, and I had the drive, grit, and muscle to get it done. Now that I’ve got some years behind me, I think that it’s unbelievable that we did that. I’m exhausted just looking back at the old blog posts and remembering how hard it all was (the work, not the blogging).
Many times over the past seven years, people who know my story will ask me and Michael for help (or direct others to us), and we’re both fired up to help, but we’re also really honest with people about how the odds are not in their favor. Not everyone has the privilege that I had at my disposal—a working partner to pay the bills, a partner with an established network, racial and socioeconomic privilege, and on and on.
We’re very interested in exploring how to fix the system in some small, holistic ways in order to give people the leg up that they need and deserve. Fixing capitalism is out of the scope of this endeavor, but our holistic approach does involve exploring the entire system, from jobseekers and career changers to middle-management and leadership. So stick around if you want to see what we are thinking and what our upcoming offerings will be. I’m excited about the next 7!
